I am Professor Emeritus of Supply Chain Management, having retired after 37 ½ years on the Penn State Business School Faculty. From July 2006 to June 2008 I served as Ports of Auckland Visiting Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management and Founding Executive Director of the Center for Supply Chain Management at The University of Auckland Business School, Auckland, New Zealand.
With over 50 years of experience in logistics, supply chain, and transportation, I have engaged in a wide range of research, educational, and consulting activities both in the United States and abroad.
My research interests have focused primarily on the organization and management of supply chain activities in manufacturing and merchandising firms and on the critical role supply chain plays in achieving corporate strategic goals. In addition I have a great deal of experience working with companies to better manage their inventories across the supply chain. I have authored more than 40 articles in refereed journals, proceedings and trade publications.
In the course of my career, I supervised numerous Ph.D. theses--two of which received the top dissertation awards from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and the Institute for Supply Management (ISM)--and taught graduate and senior level courses in strategic supply chain management. I also developed the MAS Case and Computer Simulation used in undergraduate and graduate supply chain courses at Penn State.
I have consulted with a variety of major corporations and taught Executive Management programs in the US, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In the distant past I worked 5 years for The Dow Chemical Company in distribution and logistics.
I received BS and MBA degrees from The University of Michigan and my PhD from the University of Minnesota.
